Presented in collaboration with KAPSULA Magazine, this symposium features speakers engaging in broad discussions regarding the ruptures of authenticity instigated by the fake, and the productive spaces created by processes of failing in art, praxis, politics, and more. How does a forged painting, a faked career, a hoaxed performance, or a fraudulent institution disturb static systems of value in art and historical production? And how are narratives of success, inextricably linked to the canonical, disrupted by transgressive instances of failure?

Selected papers from the symposium will be published in a special issue of KAPSULA Magazine, to be released in spring 2014.

Mercer Union is pleased to present ‘All Handles Different’, a 25 minute performance by Bridget Moser on Thursday, March 13th at 7pm. The long form performance is a site specific work created in response to the configuration of the gallery’s current exhibition Push and Pull. ‘All Handles Different’ will make use of elements of performance art, prop comedy, contemporary dance, experimental theatre, and popular culture, with a continuous slippage from one state to another. ~snacks and drinks available~
The current gallery exhibition Push and Pull (7 February – 22 March 2014) presents a series of new works by artists Bridget Moser, Michael Vickers and Nikki Woolsey. The exhibition title refers to a constant tension, a position between moving in one direction, and into another; a perpetual state of struggle.

It’s almost Tax Season again! A particularly perplexing and sometimes stressful time as an artist. Most visual artists are considered self-employed when filing their taxes. In a legal sense this means that your business as an artist, and you as an individual taxpayer, are one and the same. By understanding the tax system and how if affects your practice, you’ll pay less tax and be less likely to fall prey to erroneous tax information. Also, as an artist, there are a number of tax deductions that are unique to you!

Roberta Smith was born in New York City in 1947 and raised in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated from Grinnell College, Iowa in 1969. She has written art criticism for the New York Times since October 1986. She was art critic for the Village Voice from 1981 to 1985 and in the 1970s, wrote for Artforum, Art in America and Arts Magazine. She worked on the Donald Judd catalog raisonnè and has contributed essays to museum catalogs on various artists, including Judd, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray and Cy Twombly. Smith has lectured widely and taught at the School of Visual Arts, NYC and the Rhode Island School of Design. She received art criticism grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1975 and 1980. In 2003, she received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism from the College Art Association. Smith lives in New York City with her husband, Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine.

The MFA students in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph are pleased to welcome the public to their annual Open Studios.

Open Studios offers visitors a rare inside look at the development of new work within the hothouse environment of an art program. The public is invited to preview work in progress and chat with the artists in the informal environment of the studios.
On Wednesday, March 19 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and again from 7:30 – 9:30 pm, visitors are invited to drop by the studios of graduate students. This event is scheduled in conjunction with the Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art, presented at 6:00pm in War Memorial Hall by NY Times art critic, Roberta Smith.

Go Hard of Go Home is an exhibition by emerging artist Humboldt Magnussen, MFA candidate from OCAD University. This body of work has an autobiographical point of departure, reflecting my own identity and rural Saskatchewan upbringing, as well as being influenced by research on hyper masculinities displayed in sport. I have created sculptures, photos and performances that counters and subverts ideas of manliness. Through ornamentation and the insertion of my own queer body into a hyper masculine context I attempt to expand existing notions of masculinity, into more inclusive ones.

Call for Proposals
Gallery TPW is a not-for-profit, artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation and critical investigation of contemporary still and time-based images, exploring the exchange between photography, film and video. Through a diverse program of exhibitions, screenings, performance, new critical writing and unique public programs, TPW is distinctive in expanding an awareness of the vital role that images play in contemporary culture. Committed to the development of a critical visual literacy, TPW programs have a strong investment in the creative potential of pedagogy, cross-disciplinary dialogue and engaged institutional collaboration.
Since the fall of 2012, Gallery TPW has occupied a temporary storefront while we work towards our goal of securing a sustainable long-term home. Our project space, branded as TPW R&D, is intended as a transitional and flexible space for shared research and the development of critical discourse. As a temporary research office, our focus is discursive programming — writing, screenings, discussions, workshops, and fluid exhibition and performance strategies — where we can think out loud about our methodologies for looking and showing as much as we continue to directly experience the force of images.
While we remain committed to the long-term project of the gallery as a space of productive, sustained engagement with images, during the R&D period we’ve taken the emphasis off the treadmill of exhibitions. Our intention is to broadly consider what “research” looks like, what its goals are, and how we can do it in and with a public.
We invite local and international artists, curators and thinkers to submit expressions of interest for working with us at TPW R&D. We’re particularly interested in proposals that bring together acts of showing with directed acts of critical and affective engagement, with material and ideas but also, importantly, with each other.

ODD GALLERY
The ODD Gallery is a contemporary exhibition space housed in KIAC. The ODD Gallery’s year-round programming features solo and group exhibitions (selected and curated by committee) by regional, national and international visual artists, as well as the annual thematic project, The Natural & The Manufactured. The gallery also presents a wide array of outreach programming including artist talks, openings, lectures, screenings, youth programs and other special events. Gallery programming fosters professionalism and appreciation of regional visual arts practice and provides the community with exposure and access to a diverse range of national and international contemporary visual arts practices and theories.
The Natural & The Manufactured project re-examines the various cultural and economic values imposed on the environment, while exploring alternative political, social, economic and aesthetic strategies towards a re-interpretation of landscape and social infrastructure. The Gallery seeks proposals from visual artists working in all media for this yearly thematic project, which consists of two exhibition-creation residencies leading to one gallery-based and one outdoor installation. New project ideas are encouraged. Applications to the N&M will be considered for 6-week residencies culminating in site-specific exhibitions opening August 14, 2015.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Founded in 2001, the KIAC Artist in Residence Program has welcomed nearly 200 talented artists, musicians and filmmakers to Dawson City from all regions of Canada and around the world. The program operates year-round and accommodates two artists concurrently for residencies of four to twelve weeks in duration. Artists in Residence also facilitate outreach programs such as artist talks, open studios and workshops intended to promote interaction and professional development, and advance the understanding and appreciation of contemporary arts practices within the community.

ANNOUNCEMENT
The recipient of the award will be announced in Vancouver at the “Ten Years of the Plaskett; Exhibition and Symposium” events to be held at the Equinox Gallery and Emily Carr University on Friday May 9 and Saturday May 10, 2014.
The Prize will also be announced at the Presidents Dinner of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) AGA on Saturday May17 as part of the 134th Annual General Assembly held this year in Edmonton. Following this, the announcement will be on the website.
BACKGROUND
The Joseph Plaskett Foundation was established in 2004 and partners with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) to fulfill the vision and generousity of the Canadian born artist Joseph Plaskett, now in his 96th year, to lend expertise and administrative support.
The Plaskett Award process, now in its eleventh year, is coordinated by Emily Carr University of Art + Design Professor and artist, Landon Mackenzie. The philosophy of Mackenzie and her colleagues on the Joseph Plaskett Foundation is that strong juries choose strong candidates, which in turn enhances the integrity of this prestigious award.
