This week is the second (and last) week of the Rhubarb Festival at Buddies and Bad Times Theatre, curated by Laura Nanni. The Rhubarb Festival is set up like a choose-your-own-adventure. A $20 ticket gives you access for the night and you can choose to go to any of the different performances that are going on at the same time. I would suggest making an evening of it and taking in as much as you can. On my list of shows to see is Henri Fabvergé’s On The Lamb, a politically and sexually charged 19th Century Rock and Roll melodrama running nightly from the 19th to the 23rd at 8:30. Also on my list is Bridget Moser’s piece Jagged Canyon, “a brand new 25-minute performance for theatre about two sisters, sibling rivalry, the dynamics of being together but also being alone.” Moser is a brilliant performer who combines prop comedy, story telling and hypnotic movement into a performance you have to see to believe. Jagged Canyon runs from the 19th to the 23rd at 9:00. On Friday and Saturday there are added performances including Humboldt Magnussen’s (that’s me) Viking Blood, which is an interactive performance piece at 9:30. I have been a bit secretive about it so far so all I am going to tell you is that I have been practicing rope climbing, and I may or may not be chest bumping random strangers. After my performance stay in your seat because Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo by Zou Theatre is at 10:00, and is described as, “the ultimate performance in this bouffon-inspired send up of experimental theatre and performance art”.
Also this week on Wednesday the 19th Carbon Paper is launching their second edition at Erin Stump Projects, 1450 Dundas Street West from 7 to 11. This issue promises “Ballsier features, bigger reviews & new featured artists section curated by Erin Stump.”

Joel Herman and Garry Neill Kennedy Diaz Contemporary 100 Niagara Street Thursday February 20th 6- 8
Diaz Contemporary is pleased to present Joel Herman’s third exhibition with the gallery. Engaged with a variety of literary and cultural sources, Herman’s new work includes drawing, collage, sculpture and video, and extends into a direct conversation with the architecture of the space.
Currently based in Hamilton, Ontario, Joel Herman received his MFA from the University of Guelph and also holds a BFA from the University of Victoria. He has recently exhibited at 3433 in Chicago, the Power Plant in Toronto and Plug-In ICA in Winnipeg. His work is featured in numerous private and corporate collections.

Art Spin
Call for Submissions for Art Spin, 2014 Art Spin is gearing up for its sixth season this summer and is putting out its annual open call for submissions. Art Spin takes place on the last Thursday of June, July and August and will see roughly 300 audience members/participants on their bicycles for each event. On each tour these enthusiastic groups will visit a series of curated stops that feature a mix of galleries, artists’ studios and commissioned artworks and performances, often site-specific and in unique and unconventional spaces throughout the city. We are currently looking for submissions for art projects/performances from all disciplines (visual arts, installation, sculpture, film & video, new media, performance, dance, theatre and music etc.) to fit into our tour programming. Projects being proposed will be considered for one of the three tours taking place on: Thursday, June 26th, Thursday, July 31st or Thursday, August 28th (all tours begin at 6:30 and run until roughly 9:30pm). Time-based projects should last no longer than 15 minutes. Stops on the tour may take place in alternative venues. In past years we have commissioned projects that have taken place in parking structures, empty lots, public parks, warehouses, alleyways, churches, schoolyards, community spaces, hockey rinks and construction sites. We encourage site-specific proposals, however locations may be altered in order to better accommodate our tour routes. Artists should keep in mind the large number of participants on Art Spin tours. Projects that can be easily viewed/experienced by larger groups are more successful as well as interactive projects. Artists’ fees of $500 – $1000, depending on the project, will be awarded. Submission Guidelines:
- project description (500 word maximum in attached .doc or PDF format only)
- up to 10 images (attached files under 1M each, jpg, tiff, png, or gif) of proposed project and/or past work
- or, for time-based projects, please include no more than 5 minutes of video-support material (attached as mov, m4v or wmf formats or link to vimeo or youtube in your project description)
- an up-to-date CV/Resume (in attached .doc or PDF format only)

Osgoode Hall Law School Artist in Residence – Call for Applications
Osgoode Hall Law School of York University is putting out a call for Artist in Residence, with an application deadline of Friday, February 28, 2014. Osgoode’s Artist in Residency Program is designed to explore representations of justice and legal education in the context of Osgoode’s commitment to researching and teaching law in context. We welcome projects focused on interpreting legal history, on examining law’s realities today, and imagining law’s future, whether in Canada and/or elsewhere in the world. We are particularly interested in artists and projects which will reflect and enhance the diversity of the Osgoode community. Osgoode welcomes applications from artists of all disciplines and who work in any medium or combinations of media. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of interest (1-2 pages) and in particular what project or projects would be undertaken while in residency at Osgoode. Based on this statement of interest, applicants may be contacted for a more detailed proposal. Applications should also include the names of three referees who are familiar with the artist’s work. Proposals may or may not include a suggested course or experiential program but preference will be given to applications which contemplate engagement and interaction with Osgoode students. The Artist in Residence will normally come for a term (September-December 2014 or January-April 2015) although in exceptional circumstances, an Artist in Residence could be appointed for an academic year (September 2014-April 2015). The Artist in Residence will receive a stipend of up to $25,000 for a term or part of a term, in addition to an office and full access to the academic resources and intellectual community at Osgoode. While the Artist in Residence may hold other positions, the Artist in Residence will be expected to spend a significant portion of their period of residence at Osgoode. The successful applicant will not normally be an existing member of the York University teaching staff or student body and will not normally hold a tenure-track or tenured academic position at another institution. Applications should specify if any specific equipment or materials are required which the artist is not in a position to supply, or any other costs associated with his/her project.
