Your face, your eyes, and your mouth uses painting, analogue film, and found archives to examine memory, intimacy, and the concept of the family. The materiality of gel transfers on 16mm film and oil on burlap disrupts the comprehensibility and indexicality of found imagery. Familial memorabilia are mnemonic devices; it allows for investigation and re-visitation of people and places, offering a ‘truthful’ depiction of the private sphere. The labour of painting and transfers projects a conflicting sense of care and affection onto the inherently unfamiliar subjects. Ultimately, familial photographs and home videos are guarded; they obscure the complicated intersection of broader dominant networks, ideologies, and systems that shape the relationships that make up a family.
