Sigalit Landau: Moving to Stand Still

Koffler Gallery presents a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Sigalit Landau, who creates powerful works investigating the complex realities of her native country, Israel. As part of a significant international tour with presentations in Moscow, Budapest, Tromso and now Toronto, this exhibition brings a selection of Landau’s major video works to be shown for the first time in Canada.

The notion of endless movement in search of a place of belonging and the indelible wound of a traumatic history as well as a disputed present are central themes in Landau’s videos.
Each one of Landau’s video performances contains the offering of a moment of transcendence, the pivotal moment of choice towards an imaginable resolution. Though set up as repeating loops where action endlessly begins and fails in an ostensibly inescapable cycle, the works imply that the solution lies inside the boundaries, not in a breakout. The repetitive, confined movement becomes akin to stillness, summoning transformation from within.

Push and Pull By Bridget Moser, Michael Vickers and Nikki Woolsey
At Mercer Union, a Centre for Contemporary Art at 1286 Bloor Street West

Push and Pull presents a series of new works by artists Bridget Moser, Michael Vickers and Nikki Woolsey. The exhibition title refers to a constant tension, a position between moving in one direction, and into another; a perpetual state of struggle.
Bridget Moser’s performance and video work is suspended between internally voiced conundrums, stand-up comedy, experimental theatre, performance art, and prop comedy, with a continuous slippage from one state to another. In this in-betweenness a certain absurdity materializes, questioning a world of assumptions and belief systems.
Michael Vicker’s works sit between painting and sculpture, in prioritizing their object-hood physical struggle becomes manifest, highly industrialised materials are folded, pushed and beaten into other forms acknowledging the precarity of their formation and labour.
Nikki Woolsey coalesces distinct everyday found materials into sometimes seamless yet habitually unfamiliar forms. Broken vases, glass panels, and other quotidian objects seep into abstraction, questioning how we perceive objects and place value, and disrupting existent systems of knowledge.

Another Dark Day Passes

Another Dark Day Passes’ is an exploration of psychedelic landscapes and alternative realities. This show invites viewers to experience the gallery as a portal to an altered psychological state. The works presented oscillate between material reality and dream-like illusion. The holographic and iridescent aesthetic that runs through the show is meant to communicate optimism by transforming the gallery into an ethereal environment. Conversely, dissonant elements have been incorporated with the intent of disarming the viewer to release meditative energy and open up the imagination. It is a psychological mirage, where confusion and darkness give way to possibility and hope.

Jessie Short and Heather Haynes first met when Jessie, an emerging Aboriginal curator, co-curated an exhibition at the Toronto Free Gallery in June 2012. Since this time, Jessie and Heather’s paths continue to cross in the arts/cultural world of Toronto. Both will discuss their respective understanding of anti-oppression work and the role of allies, taking account of the differences between theory, practice, taking responsibility and the necessity for building relationships.

Nadia Belerique “The Counselor”

Opening Reception: Saturday February 8, 2-5 pm
Commissioned by Gallery TPW to make a single image exhibition, with The Counselor, Nadia Belerique plays with the limits of photography. “All photographs are a hand and index finger, pointing to something else.” Belerique is interested to see what the photograph points to but is more interested in the hand (the photograph) itself. Can a photograph be a stand-in for what it depicts? A life size, cardboard cut-out of Star Trek’s Deanna Troi becomes a charming and awkward stand-in, the perfect image-object. Reworking the stand-in, Belerique’s new image teases us, asking us to linger longer in the moment when we look towards the hand that points.

In the last decade, catalyzed by Marina Abramovic’s Seven Easy Pieces and then The Artist is Present, there has been a resurgence of interest in “reperformance.” LINK & PIN wonders… why? Why reperform? What are the disciplinary, ethical, and temporal dilemmas one faces in the process of reperforming? Is it even possible to reperform a performance art work? Is it possible only, as Abramovic posits, with certain “rules” followed (i.e. contacting the original artist for permission)?

FEAST (Funding Engaging Actions with Sustainable Tactics) Toronto is a series of community dinners and micro-funding events. During each dinner, artists, designers and groups are invited to present proposals for art- or design-based projects. Everyone attending the dinner votes on which project they would like to fund, and the project with the most votes is given a grant from the money raised from the ticket sales. The grant winner(s) will be invited back to the next FEAST to present their completed project.
We are looking for proposals for the next FEAST, edition 07, and taking place on Sunday, February 23rd, 2014 at Xpace Cultural Centre 303 Lansdowne Avenue, Toronto.
FEAST 07 proposals should include:
A Project Summary
(1), and the answers to the following questions:
(2) How will you use funding to realize your project?
(3) Why is this project critical to the FEAST community (e.g. why would the FEAST community be interested in supporting your project)?
(4) The names and contact information for all of your presenters
IMPORTANT! You must be able to attend the FEAST event on February 23rdin order to apply. Project presentations are given in-person by the presenters to the gathered guests over dinner, and then everyone gets to vote on which project they would like to fund. The money raised from the dinner (estimated at $700+)
will go to fund the project with the most votes. We will also have a separate student grant of $300 donated by Xpace Cultural Centre.
Each section of the proposal (1-4) should be no longer than 100 words. Remember these will be short presentations, so keep it brief and to the point! In order to be considered for FEAST funding, you must be able to attend the event. Tickets for this locally- sourced, vegetarian dinner will be $20-30, and $10 for
students.

SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) is accepting
submissions for “Work It.”, its 8th Annual Juried Members’
Exhibition, taking place at gallerywest from 1-29 June 2014.
For this exhibition, SAVAC invites proposals for critical and innovative artworks that explore issues surrounding the topic of art and labour. Potential themes include, but are not limited to: precarity, gendered labour, art production in a time of austerity, working to survive vs. “Do What You Love (DYWL)”.
Submissions can cover all formats, including painting, drawing, print-making, sculpture, performance, film video, sound and new media installations. Submissions will be juried by SAVAC’s Artistic Director, Sharlene Bamboat, gallerywest Owner and Program Director, Evan Tyler, special guest jurors Min Sook Lee (Filmmaker), and Amber Landgraff (Director of Xpace Cultural Centre).
Works must be produced during or after January 2012. Submissions from emerging artists, and students are welcome. Artist fees will be paid. There are no submission fees, but artists must be SAVAC members in order to submit. Become a member ($30/yr), here.

SNAP welcomes submissions from artists, collectives, curators and collaborations practicing in all printmaking & print-related media (including but not limited to: photography, installation, video, drawing, collage, printed matter). SNAP’s Main Gallery Space is programmed through an annual call for submissions as well as through curated exhibitions.
The Society of Northern Alberta Print-Artists is an Artist-Run Non-profit in Edmonton, Alberta dedicated to the production, presentation and dissemination of Fine Art Printmaking and Contemporary Print Media. The SNAP Gallery programs eight Main Gallery exhibitions every year.

Submissions should consist of:
- A project proposal explaining the specifics of the proposed exhibition. (maximum 1 page)

- Corresponding image list indicating the artist’s name, title of work, media and date
- An artist statement, which describes and contextualizes the work presented. (maximum 1 page).
- Curriculum Vitae or artist resume
- 1 – 2 items of support materials as appropriate (DVD, Publications, Print Articles). These support items will not be returned.

C NEW CRITICS COMPETITION

The C New Critics Competition is designed to help develop and promote the work of emerging art critics. Writers must submit a review of an exhibition, performance, or site-specific intervention, between 800 and 1,000 words in length, by Friday April 11, 2014.
The jury for the award includes Amish Morrell, editor of C
Magazine. The winner will receive $500, editorial support in order to
prepare their article for publication in C Magazine, and a two-year subscription to C. All participants will recieve a one year subscription to C Magazine.
Participants are not restricted by age or citizenship. To be eligible, writers must have published no more than two exhibition reviews or one article in a magazine or journal. Writers are not disqualified for having written for personal blogs or student publications. One submission is allowed per person and must be sent as an email attachment, in MS Word to Amish Morrellamishmorrell@cmagazine.com. Mail or fax submissions will not be accepted.
FIBREWORKS 2014
A biennial juried exhibition of Canadian fibre art

Fibreworks, now in its 15th edition, is a biennial juried exhibition of contemporary Canadian fibre art. It is a showcase of the most current and versatile approaches to fibre as a medium in form and production. This exhibition is one of the largest group shows in Canada dedicated specifically to fibre based works and serves as a survey of the artists currently working in the medium. As many as 35 artists participate in the exhibition with works selected by an independent jury. All works selected for the exhibition are eligible for the Juror’s award and may be purchased by Cambridge Galleries IDEA|EXCHANGE as part of its permanent collection dedicated exclusively to Canadian fibre art. 7a*11d International Festival of Performance

The 10th edition of the 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art will take place in Toronto from October 26 to November 2, 2014. Curated and organized by a non-profit artist collective, the festival presents innovative and progressive contemporary performance art by local, national and international artists. This call for submissions is an invitation restricted to artists from Canada. We are looking for emerging, mid-career and established artists in Canada alongside international artists to showcase the breadth and depth of current contemporary performance art practice. We pay artist fees that meet or exceed CARFAC guidelines, accommodation, and travel. We cannot accommodate dance, theatre, or circus troupes/companies. No email submissions please.
