Hoekstra’s research regarding gesture’s relationship to the movement-image began with the looped video Twitch (2011), in which a three second video of a donkey’s ear twitch is cropped and enlarged. The work was realized after the re-visitation of a discarded set of digital footage taken at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada, just outside of Guelph. Through cropping and the expansion of a close-up, the interlaced video image is both degraded and amplified, its material appearing as a spectral trace that haunts the moving image until the loop immediately re-starts. The twitch of the ear predicts the ‘twitch’ produced by the loop, pointing to and revealing the most recognizable gesture of video exhibition.
