The spaces we inhabit are simultaneously light and heavy. They are filled with a materiality so malleable, they seem to breathe with the growth and grief that fills them. “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” is a gathering of familiar motifs and forms that, like a sponge, absorb meaning, memory, and experience. Here, material, in its archival potential, becomes a soft, intimate reflection.
“Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” has been graciously supported by Toronto Arts Council @torontoartscouncil.
Artist Bio:
Jill Smith is a queer, Jewish multi-disciplinary artist born and based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Currently working in Waterloo as a MFA candidate at University of Waterloo, her research focuses on the intersections of Judaism, object oriented ontology, and eco-feminism. Jill is curious about the malleability and nonsensical nature of both identity and material. Jill is still unsure if she is a Taurus or Aries.
