Considering the kitsch qualities of the “perfect home”, qualities of women’s work and
traditional images that are produced around idealized romantic relationships, I Hope You’re Doing Well discusses the subject of romantic relationships. Exploring the distaste or taboo nature of communicating romance within visual art, Coleman uses the language of kitsch in order to allow the work to be intentionally excessive, garish, overly sentimental and ironic. Playing with the construction of idealized relationship rituals that are commercially practised through the language of craft, this exhibition speaks to the romantic emotions of heartbreak which are considered cliché within academic understandings of the lover’s discourse.
