In 2013, Toronto City Council passed a motion making Toronto the first “sanctuary city” in Canada. While a sanctuary city seeks to ensure that people without “legal” status have access to essential services, Sanctuary Inter/rupted, interrogates both the contradictions and possibilities of these claims. We know that the state always already treats non-white bodies as “illegal”. Through photography, mixed media, writing, and video installations, the interactive body of work is accompanied by songs and soundbites that present visual and sonic inquiry into questions related to diaspora, (im)migration, colonialism, histories and futures of justice in the city.
WAY PAST KENNEDY ROAD is a collective of multidisciplinary emerging artists based in Scarborough and other rejected but resilient corners of the GTA. We build spaces for ourselves both online and offline using art as a means of resisting the borders and boundaries that define each of our lives and our works in distinct ways.
Sanctuary Inter/rupted is supported by University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union. All design materials were made by Cinderullah.
