Non-Functional Objects in Space aims to explore the issues and questions surrounding the categorization of transitionary spaces, and Walker’s understanding of them. Her interest in construction materials stems from their capacity to influence space- they act as containers as well as disruptors. Oscillating between painting and sculpture, the work was created to explore the relationship of the objects to the space they occupy. Ambiguity and transformation are crucial to Walker’s work, allowing for collapse of the space, but also reconciliation. Stripped of their function, the materials become re-imagined as art objects, valued for their aesthetic and formal qualities.
